Young Beth Harmon found herself in an orphanage located in a small town in Kentucky, after the tragic events that claimed the lives of her close relatives. The girl who lost her parents grew up a sullen and withdrawn person who was reluctant to contact her peers. When the girl accidentally discovered her talent for playing chess, her existence changed dramatically.

As a teenager, the main character became addicted to tranquilizers used in an orphanage as a sedative for children experiencing certain psycho-emotional difficulties. Caught on the slippery slope of drug addiction, pursued by inner demons, the girl does not stop doing what she loves. Betty's only goal is to be recognized in the chess world, which is dominated by representatives of the strong half of humanity. A young chess player very quickly declared herself as a high-class player.
