The civil war in the USA came to an end. John Wilks Booth and his satellite Michael O'Loklun search for Thomas Gates. The tradition of search of treasures in this family began with it. Booth has with himself a notebook which contains the ciphered message. Only Thomas, the master of codes and the fan of puzzles of the biggest complexity, can read him. Thomas quickly defines that in the message Pleyfer's code is used and tries to read it. Until Thomas is busy with this scrupulous business, Booth kills the president Lincoln.

When Thomas already approaches a message solution, he suddenly understands that Booth's satellite - not who other as the Knight of the Gold Circle. It is radical group of southerners confederates. And it means that if they by means of Thomas solve the message, war will be resumed. Thomas cannot allow it. He pulls out the page in cipher from the notebook and throws it into fire. The furious satellite of Booth shoots at Thomas and hard will wound him. Also he tries to rescue a leaf in cipher from fire, but manages to pull out only the burned piece. O'Loklun flees the crime scene, having left in the living little boy, the son Thomas by the name of Charles. Tells this story to listeners of the conference devoted to heroes of civil war, the great-great-grandfather Tomasa Bin Gates.
